Celebrating Buddha’s Enlightenment Day

Detox Your Mind – 2 day Fasting and Purification Retreat

Introduction : Thursday April 13, 7:00-8:30pm

In -Depth Retreat : Friday and Saturday April 14-15

Free Event

Every year to celebrate Buddha’s Enlightenment Day on April 15, Kadampas around the world engage in Nyungne, a special purification practice. This two day retreat, which is done in conjunction with Thousand-Armed Avalokiteshvara, is very powerful for purifying past negative karma of body, speech, and mind, and for pacifying strong delusions such as desirous attachment and hatred.

The essence of the Buddhist path is compassion. In this practice, which involves taking Mahayana Precepts conjoined with the practice of prostrations we purify our mind fully by meditating extensively on compassion.

In this retreat we make many effective prayers for all suffering to completely cease. We emphasize outer and inner purification through fasting, prayer , silence and prostrations.

Retreat:

Retreat provides an opportunity to gain deeper experience of meditation. On retreat we withdraw from our usual routine and structure our time and conditions so that we can get the most out of our meditation.

Fasting :

Depending on whether you are choosing to partisapate  one day or the full retreat, if one day , we fast by taking only one meal mid-day and we are permitted to have as much water or tea as we like and take precepts in the morning. If the full retreat , we take precepts both mornings , one meal mid-day on the first day and abstain from food and drink completely the second day of the retreat.   If we are only participating for one day of the retreat, we take one meal and as much water or tea as we like.

Each day of the  retreat begins at 6:30am with the practice of taking the Eight Mahayana Precepts using the prayer booklet A Pure Life. Then we engage in three sessions of chanted prayers with prostrations to the compassion Buddha, Thousand-armed Avalokiteshvara. Prayer booklets are provided by the Center for your use during the retreat.

Precepts session is about 30 minutes, and each session is about 1 and 1/2 hours.

In order to participate in this retreat, you must take precepts each morning you participate. You may engage in one or two days of the retreat.

Everyone is welcome to the special Wishfulling Jewel Puja (chanted prayers with food offerings ) on April 15th even if you have not engaged in the retreat.

If you would like to bring a nonperishable offering for the shrine such as flowers, incense, light , food ,etc. please do. This is customary but not essential to participate.
